What is dual credit? |
Who is eligible to take Dual Credit? |
Dual credit gives students the opportunity to earn college credit at the same time they are earning high school credit. For example, if they take DC Psychology, they will earn 3 college credit hours and 0.5 credit of high school social studies since it is a single semester class.
What college is dual credit through? All dual credit classes are through Moberly Area Community College. Seniors in Personal Finance also have the opportunity to earn credit through Missouri State University and students in Animal Science can earn it through University of Central Missouri. These are both completely separate processes, and they will learn more about that once they begin the class.
What is a dual credit class like? These are college classes so they are more rigorous and rely heavily on student responsibility. For the 23-24 school year, we are offering two classes in house, taught by SoBoCo teachers: DC College English (12th grade) and DC American History (11th grade). Since these are offered in seat, they cannot be taken online. The rest of the classes offered are online. Students are allotted one period in their day for each online class they are taking where they are assigned to a room and expected to work on their online course. You will hear these hours referred to as DCON for dual credit online.
What else do I need to know about dual credit courses?
|
Dual credit courses are offered to Juniors and Seniors. The student must have a 3.0 GPA or a 2.5 GPA with administration and parent approval. DC College English requires a minimum ACT score of 18 on both English and Reading sections. DC College Algebra requires a minimum ACT score of 22 on the math section OR a 3.5 GPA with a B- or higher in Algebra II. If students do not have these scores, they make take the Accuplacer. The counselor will conference with these students as needed. All scores must be met before payment is accepted.
How much does dual credit cost?MACC offers these classes to high school students at a reduced rate. For the 23-24 school year, the cost is $80 per credit. All courses are 3 or 4 credit hours. Some courses have an online book fee or lab fee. Payment plans through MACC are available.
Will dual credit transfer to any college? It is a good idea to research schools that you are considering and seeing how a specific course will transfer. They will all transfer, but some may only transfer as elective credits. Many colleges have a Course Equivalency Evaluator where you can see what a MACC course would be at another institution. It is highly recommended to keep this in mind when choosing courses. While they are at a reduced rate, it is still vital to choose courses that will best benefit the student down the road. Your counselor is happy to help evaluate course choices.
